Milan, Italy:

Twenty years ago, Professor Shu Chang first visited Turin, Italy, to perform surgery. Over nearly two decades, he has participated in academic conferences and surgical demonstrations in Turin, Rome, and Milan, forging deep friendships with local experts. Italian scholars have also frequently visited China for academic exchanges and sent young doctors to Fuwai Hospital for further training. Recently, Professor Shu successfully performed three complex thoracic aortic endovascular repair surgeries in Milan and Turin, including Italy’s first case of dual fenestration for aortic arch reconstruction using both ex vivo and in vivo techniques. All surgeries were completed successfully.

São Paulo, Brazil:

The prestigious international vascular surgery conferences, Congresso International de Cirurgia Endovascular (CICE 2024) and Aorta Symposium 2024, were held in São Paulo, Brazil. After leaving Italy, Professor Shu was invited to attend these conferences. He received a warm welcome from local experts and participated in multiple academic sessions. Co-chairing with Professor Eric Verhoeven from Klinikum Nuremberg, Germany, Professor Shu shared techniques on using the first domestically-produced branched stent graft in complex cases. He presented five-year post-market clinical data of the Chinese-made abdominal aortic stent, sparking lively discussions among participants. During these conferences, Professor Shu performed four live surgeries, demonstrating the use of these products and explaining surgical details and intraoperative precautions.

Hamburg, Germany:

Following the events in Brazil, Professor Shu was invited to the University of Hamburg for a surgical demonstration. Founded in 1919, the University of Hamburg is one of Germany’s most prestigious universities, home to six Nobel Prize winners. Professor Shu performed a fenestrated thoracic endovascular repair (TEVAR) for an aortic arch case with insufficient landing zone, preserving blood supply to the aortic arch branches.

Jakarta, Indonesia:

In July 2024, Professor Shu was the only Chinese expert invited by the President of the Indonesian Heart Association to the 4th Indonesian Vascular Academic Annual Meeting. He delivered four lectures on endovascular aortic treatments, sharing his experiences with Indonesian doctors. He also conducted two surgical demonstrations at Harapan Kita Hospital, showcasing the ex vivo fenestration technique for aortic stents.

Fuwai Hospital is actively participating in the “Belt and Road” initiative, establishing a comprehensive international aortic minimally invasive technology training base and academic exchange platform. The Vascular Surgery Center has signed four international academic cooperation agreements with cardiovascular medical centers or societies along the “Belt and Road” countries, training over 200 specialized doctors from 17 countries across four continents, including the United States, Russia, and Italy. The center’s experts have also held training courses in Vietnam, Russia, and Indonesia multiple times.

Additional Note:

On July 17, 2024, Professor Shu Chang was appointed as an adjunct professor at the University of Indonesia, becoming the first Chinese expert to receive this honor. At the appointment ceremony, Professor Shu expressed his gratitude and commitment to promoting medical exchanges and cooperation between China and Indonesia, contributing to the improvement of healthcare standards in both countries and globally.
