March 12, 2024 - Indian laparoscopic surgical robotics company SS Innovations International, Inc. announced that surgeons have successfully completed the world's first mitral valve replacement using its SSi Mantra surgical robotic system.

SSi Mantra Robot Performs Mitral Valve Replacement

This is the first mitral valve replacement to be performed using a surgical robot manufactured in India. The surgery was performed at the Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Bangalore, India, by Dr. Nitin Kumar Rajput under the direction of Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder and Chairman of SS Innovations, one of the early pioneers of robotic heart bypass surgery. This surgery marks a significant milestone in the treatment of heart disease using the SSi Mantra Surgical Robotic System.

We are very proud of our team for pushing the boundaries and being able to extend full-spectrum robotic cardiac surgery to all other surgical subspecialties,” said Dr. Srivastava. Currently, 90-95% of cardiac surgeries are still performed using a large-incision open-heart approach. Since the company's inception, our goal has always been to meet the needs of cardiac patients for highly minimally invasive solutions. During my practice in the United States, I have found that patients can benefit from a surgical approach that avoids splitting the sternum. Many patients are discharged the next day and return to full cardiac function within a week to ten days. The surgical results were a pleasant surprise. This led me to develop a more sophisticated robotic bypass procedure that has been adopted by other surgeons and will ultimately benefit more and more patients undergoing heart surgery.”

Speaking after the successful completion of the surgery, Dr. Nitin Kumar Rajput, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Narayana Health and the lead surgeon for the mitral valve replacement said, “We have performed more than 60 CABGs (Cardiac Bypass Surgery) using SSi Mantra Surgical Robot. This was the first time we used it for mitral valve repair and the procedure went smoothly. the Mantra robotic system operates wonderfully, with four ports on its arm and a 2.5 cm miniature working port for table assistants. the patient was able to have a very quick and easy surgery with the SSi Mantra robotic system. The surgery was completed quickly and the patient is doing well postoperatively, with good exercise tolerance at discharge three days after surgery.”

SSi Mantra Helps Advance Robotic Cardiac Surgery

The mitral valve disease market size was $2.5 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $5.7 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 8.8% from 2022 to 2031.

The SSi Mantra Surgical Robotic System has performed a variety of robotic cardiac surgeries, including bilateral internal mammary resections, total endoscopic coronary artery bypass grafting of beating hearts, repair of atrial septal defects, and a just-completed robotic mitral valve replacement.

Dr. Srivastava said, “SS Innovations is committed to improving patient access and optimizing surgical outcomes through easy-to-use and cost-effective surgical robotic systems. This successful procedure opens up new avenues of treatment for heart disease, providing patients with less invasive options, shorter recovery times and better surgical outcomes.”

The SSi Mantra Surgical Robotic System is the first surgical robotic system made in India and one of the few cost-effective options globally with a wide range of surgical applications. The system has received regulatory approvals in India, Indonesia and Guatemala and is in clinical use, having been validated in more than 50 different types of surgical procedures.SS Innovations has initiated the regulatory approval process in the U.S. and the EU and expects to receive approvals in the second half of 2024 or 2025.
