On December 26, 2023, Professor Shu Chang of Fu Wai Hospital of Chinese Academy of Sciences was invited to start a 5-day academic visit to Egypt. Both countries are ancient civilizations, and the friendly exchanges between the two peoples go back a long way. Prof. Shu and Prof. Sherif Elkerdawi, Secretary General of the Egyptian Society of Vascular and Endoluminal Therapy, had an in-depth exchange on the relationship between the two countries as well as common vascular surgery problems. During the 3-hour meeting, the two experts reached a friendly consensus and signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation.

The following day, Prof. Shu, accompanied by Prof. Sherif Elkerdawi and Prof. Mohamed Hosni Eldesokki (President of the Egyptian Society for Vascular and Endoluminal Therapy), visited the Center for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Mansoura University. During his visit to Mansoura, he performed thoracic aortic endoluminal repair (TEVAR) on a patient with aortic coarctation. During the procedure, the CSkirt™ Skirt Stent System, a new type of aortic coated stent with China's own intellectual property rights, was applied, and the procedure was successfully completed in conjunction with the Ankura™ Thoracic Aortic Coated Stent and the Futhrough™ Aortic Coated Stent Breaking System. This is also the first case of complex thoracic aortic lesions repaired endolumatically using in situ windowing technique in Egypt.

On the third day, Prof. Shu traveled to Gamal Abdelnasser Hospital in Alexandria together with Prof. Mohamed Hosni Eldesokki. Prof. Shu was invited to perform in situ TEVAR on another patient with complicated aortic coarctation. Prof. Shu pointed out the difficulties and precautions of the surgery to the experts present, and formulated the surgical plan and countermeasures in detail, successfully completing the surgery within half an hour and avoiding the occurrence of dangerous situations during the operation. After the operation, the experts present expressed that they had benefited a lot.

On the fourth day, Prof. Shu was invited to participate in an academic event organized by the Egyptian Society for Vascular and Endoluminal Therapies at the Princess Fatma Training Center of the National Training Institute. Prof. Shu shared his clinical experience over the past decade related to the treatment of aortic arch lesions, which has always been a major clinical challenge for vascular surgeons.
According to Prof. Shu, chimney (C-TEVAR), extracorporeal windowing (F-TEVAR), and in situ windowing (I-TEVAR) as TEVAR adjunctive techniques can be accomplished with readily available devices. Total endoluminal treatment of patients with lesions involving the aortic arch is challenging because of the varied vascular anatomy of the aortic arch and supra-arch branch arteries. The feasibility and efficacy of chimney, extracorporeal opening, and in situ needle-opening techniques in TEVAR have been demonstrated in previous cohorts, with satisfactory midterm follow-up results, as a safe alternative to open surgery. Of course, further long-term follow-up is needed to assess the stability and applicability of these techniques. In addition, Prof. Shu also had a fruitful on-site discussion with Egyptian vascular surgeons from different academic centers and hospitals, which achieved the purpose of this visit.

At the end of the trip, Prof. Shu Chang and Prof. Mohamed Hosni Eldessoki, President of the Egyptian Society of Vascular Surgery and Endoluminal Therapy, officially signed the strategic cooperation agreement between the Chinese National Committee of Cardiovascular Disease Experts, Vascular Surgery Specialty Committee (NSVS) and the Egyptian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery and Endoluminal Therapy (EVES). Both parties expressed that they will take this signing as an opportunity to strengthen communication and exchange and promote the win-win development of both sides. This is a milestone for the development and cooperation between China and Egypt in the field of healthcare, and an important manifestation of the high-level practical cooperation between China and Egypt under the framework of comprehensive strategic partnership.
